Orbit vs Proton
Proton and Orbit share the idea that your provider shouldn't be able to read your mail. Proton has been at it since 2014, with more apps and independent audits; Orbit is new, and adds team chat and device management to the same account. Here is how they compare, including where Proton is ahead.
| What | Orbit | Proton checked 11 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | A small team in the United States, since 2026. | Proton AG, in Switzerland, since 2014. |
| Mail on your domain, for one | Starter, $3 a month. | Mail Plus, $4.99 a month month to month, with one custom domain. |
| Mailbox storage | No fixed quota. | 15 GB on Mail Plus. |
| Mail encryption | Mail from outside is sealed to your key on arrival, and end to end between Orbit Mail users. We see sender, recipients, subject and date. | Much the same: incoming mail is encrypted with your key, and end to end between Proton users. Subject lines are visible to Proton too. |
| Calendar | Not end-to-end encrypted yet. | End-to-end encrypted. |
| Team chat and calls | Orbit Chat: channels, direct messages and calls, end-to-end encrypted. | Video meetings with Proton Meet. |
| Passwords | Orbit Pass, with vaults shared across your team. | Proton Pass. |
| Files, documents, VPN | None. | Proton Drive with Docs, and Proton VPN. |
| AI | Your inbox is sorted on your device. Orbit AI's chat uses cloud models you choose, through providers we name. | Lumo, Proton's own AI assistant. |
| Mail apps and IMAP | Orbit Mail's own apps only. No IMAP. | Proton's apps, or any IMAP app through Proton Mail Bridge on paid plans. |
| Moving in | Import .mbox and .eml files, and passwords from every major manager. | Easy Switch imports straight from Gmail, and from files. |
| Phones | iPhone and iPad apps on the way. No Android apps. | Android and iPhone. |
| Devices | Orbit MDM and Orbit RMM, free on up to 10 devices each. | Not offered. |
| Self-hosting | Run the open-source mail relay yourself, or use ours. | Not offered. |
